THRIVE Skill Training Exercise Guides
52-weeks of relational-brain based skill exercises
Grow and strengthen your protector skills!

Year One

Jim Wilder and Chris Coursey met on a hot summer afternoon in 2002 to begin figuring out practical ways to train people in nonverbal brain skills. Chris wanted things to be enjoyable and fun as a learning environment could be. Jim wanted things to be as close to theoretically perfect as a practical application of brain science can be. Chris would test the design with a small group of people in recovery and Jim would try them on leaders. Before long they had to divide every THRIVE conference into minutes and assign as many minutes as possible to training exercises with the 19 THRIVE brain skills. However, Chris fell in love and lost considerable concentration and focus.

Before too long the skill guide development team included Lady Jen who was very organized. It was good to have Jen for two reasons, Chris was more focused and Jen laid out every exercise very clearly.

There were three objectives. The exercises had to be as fun as Chris could make it, the exercises had to fit well in the THRIVE flow and be spelled out as clearly as Jen required. Each exercise needed to be as close to the ideal exercise as Jim could make it. All this led to two problems. First, people could learn the skills in the six packed training days at THRIVE but they did not get enough practice to get good at them. Chris, Jen and Jim developed far too many good exercises to fit in the 2055 training minutes of a THRIVE week. Lady Jen laid out a brilliant solution over the 52 weeks between one THRIVE training and the next track. These practice sessions build skill and prepare participants for the second track of THRIVE

These books are designed to go after the THRIVE Conference experience just like the Living From The Heart Jesus Gave You, Bringing the LIFE Model to Life and the Sensible Strategies for Belonging video and study guide are designed to prepare you for your first THRIVE Conference. These materials are well suited for use in small group study, growth and recovery groups.

Year Two

You might think that things are all fun and games, joy and peace over in THRIVE land but it is not so. When Lady Jen started THRIVE in 2002 she was on disability for her emotional state and did not expect she could ever hold a real job or return to society. She did not like remembering being so depressed that she had to be hospitalized at age 11. She knew that sometimes she could do well in school but at other times her emotions were so out of whack that it took a week’s concentration to fill out a form. Learning the THRIVE skills in her own life became a turning point. By 2004 her intellectual abilities were much more available and by 2006 Jen was leading THRIVE training for others.

The second year of THRIVE is all about emotional recovery skills. These exercises are the practical steps to retraining your brain if something has gone wrong along the way. The order of the training and careful instructions have all been laid out carefully by Lady Jen. Do you think she takes this training seriously? Jim continued to make sure that every exercise is designed correctly but if, like Lady Jen you are on a mission to change your life and learn to function, change your generation and enjoy your life – you are going to love this workout book. The next 50 weeks can change your life.

We still know that no one can practice what he or she has not learned. Trying to do these practice exercises when you have not learned the skills doesn’t work. You can learn the skills in the 34 ¼ hours of training in each year of THRIVE and once you finish Track II this practice book is just what you need. Be as serious about your training as Jen is!

Because some of the exercises you experience at Track III can be extremely challenging and even dangerous if not properly done, we require preparation before attendees can participate in some of the exercises and skill training Track III offers. It is for this reason you will need to bring in your finished Year Two Skill Guide to Track III of THRIVE to fully participate and complete your Track III training as well as to receive complete credit for your conference participation.

Year Three

The team set high standards for what happens after Track Three of THRIVE. Since the focus turns from receiving to giving there needs to be one powerful tool to make the transition successful. Chris, Lady Jen and Jim Wilder put their combined effort to release Year Three Advanced THRIVE Skills: Strategic Mastery, one full year of training. Now you focus how to train other people. Travel to new heights as you practice these skills with your partner, family and community. Chris and Jen are proud of this addition to the THRIVE package.

Year Three Skill Guide is a bold approach to help you propagate the 19 brain skills through exercises and activities. You learn to deal with complex issues such as attachment pain as well as implicit memory issues that are known to be joy robbers. In Strategic Mastery you have plenty of practice for returning to joy, acting like yourself, utilizing Godsight, dealing with the sark along with some innovative ways to use Skill 15, Interactive Quieting. The biggest addition has to do with Skill 18, where you practice Intervening Where the Brain is Stuck. Learn and utilize strategic solutions to your pain and the pain your loved ones experience.

Included in this workbook is the Belonging Attachment Pain and Cravings Checklist as well as the Relational Circuits information. These invaluable resources take THRIVE training to another level. Use Strategic Mastery and begin changing your generation!
